Encouraging Your Team Members to Take the Lead

#26, October 14, 2008

When looking to improve the way you manage the work environment, there is one tool from what I call the "old management" handbook that impedes progress in a whole host of areas: control!

You will never encourage or develop the talents of your team members if you insist on retaining control over them. In fact, you really can't control people. Haven't you already noticed that people basically do what they want to do? The only thing you really have control over is the environment you create. What are the things you do, or decisions you make, that members of your team are quite capable of doing? Oftentimes leaders retain control of things that they have no need to control.

Here are a few ways for you to encourage your team members to take more control of their own jobs:

  1. Identify specific tasks or projects that match the talents of individuals in your team. Getting them more involved in projects that utilize their talents will boost their confidence and their willingness to show leadership.
  2. Encourage team members to take turns in facilitating team meetings and let them run the meeting without interruption from you.
  3. Make time at each team meeting to get ideas and input on what needs changing, fixing, or improving in the organization.
  4. Give regular and encouraging feedback to your team members about their skills and how they can contribute acts of leadership in certain situations.
