Helping Your Team Members Understand Their Role in Fulfilling the Organization's Purpose

#27, October 21, 2008

Every business has a purpose--the reason it exists. Leaders in many organizations have lost sight of the fact that their business was created for a reason beyond making money--it was created to deliver value to its customers; preferably a value its competitors cannot match. It is worthwhile and important, therefore, to discuss your organization's purpose with your team and help them identify the purpose of their role within your organization.

When each team member is clear on why their role exists--how they add value--their work becomes more meaningful. They can then see the importance of what they do in supporting the purpose of the team, department, and organization.

When team members understand the real purpose of the organization and how what they do contributes to that purpose, they become more engaged and passionate about their work.

Here are some ways you can help your team members understand their role in fulfilling the organization's purpose:

  1. Discuss the organization's purpose with the team and have a conversation about what it means and its implications for your team's direction.
  2. With your team members, develop a statement that defines the team's purpose and explore how it supports the organization's purpose.
  3. Ask team members to identify what they believe the purpose of their role is and how it fits in with the team and organization's purpose.
  4. Encourage team members to discuss their individual purpose statements with each other to gain clarity and a shared understanding.
  5. Ask team members to discuss how understanding the purpose of each other's roles can help them be more successful in fulfilling the team and organization's purpose.
