How to Create an Environment Where People Enjoy Coming to Work

#28, October 28, 2008

When you think about the health of your work environment, what factors do you consider? The physical work environment, in terms of natural lighting and comfortable space? Cafeterias and relaxation areas? Parks and recreation facilities? Proximity to public transportation? Environment can mean different things to different people. While the physical environment is important, our research shows that it pales into insignificance compared to the emphasis employees place on the emotional environment--the relationships they have at work.

Exceptional leaders understand that it is the emotional environment, primarily, that determines whether employees are engaged or not. They create a great work environment by treating people with respect, helping team members develop and utilize their talents, and letting them know that they are truly valued. They also encourage team members to develop good relationships with each other and build a strong sense of team spirit.

Here are some ideas you can use to create an environment where people enjoy coming to work:

  1. Take time out to look at the physical environment within which you and your team work. What do you notice? Does it look employee-friendly? If you are not sure, ask the team what they think could be done to make the workplace more physically appealing. Consideration should also be given to occupational health and safety issues.
  2. Ask team members what the team can do to build the trust level. Are there any barriers to building trust that need to be removed?
  3. Everyone has a need for respect. Regularly let people in your team know they are valued and that you appreciate their efforts. It is not that people have short memories; it's just that they like to hear it more often!
